1XV

L.S.R.G. 1XV   

The first team (1XV) is the heart of the Leidsch Studenten Rugby Gezelschap. Since 14 October 1960, the 1XV has been leading the way for the 'gezelschap' and 'Rugby Nederland'. The rugby clubs DIOK, Oisterwijk Oysters and RCC Roosendaal originated as branches from the 1XV. Many former players are now indispensable at other (inter)national clubs. The 1XV plays in the second division south and is building to play - as before - in the first division. 

The first team is the perfect opportunity to make the most of your student time. Playing at a high level in the national league but also while participating in various 7s, 10s, beach and 15s tournaments both at home and abroad. The 1XV is also an established part of the Dutch Student Rugby Team (NST) and occasional teams such as the Wild Dogs and the Jagerbombers. There are also regular social activities such as an annual trip abroad, get-togethers and dinners.

Coaches 

Het 1XV stond tot 2024 onder begeleiding van Wilnus Versteijen en Brian McCarthy. Samen vormen zij een dynamisch duo wat al vele jaren de top van Nederland coacht. Vanaf 2024 wordt het 1XV gecoacht door Merlijn Schreuder. 

Wilnus Versteijnen

Wilnus played as second row, number 8 and flanker in South Africa before coming to the Netherlands to study and play for DIOK 1 and the Dutch rugby team. He became national champion several times and took 'Rugby Nederland' to a new level during his time as a player. After his career as a player, he threw himself fully into coaching. Among others, he has had DIOK 1, DIOK Colts and the Dutch National Team Under-18 under his wing. Wilnus' main qualities lie in systematic play, defensive work, the ruck, scrum and line-out.  

Brian McCarthy

A New Zealand native, Brian has spent his rugby career in New Zealand. He spent several years as a halfback in the country with the highest grassroots level in the world. Brian went to work in the Netherlands after his rugby career and also threw himself fully into coaching. He coached several youth teams of DIOK after which he started leading teams together with Wilnus from the Juniors onwards. Brian's qualities are the refined aspects of the game. Kicking, passing, fixing a defender, manipulating the defensive line, set plays and open plays tackling are among his specialities.
